I loved your run-on! Sometimes, there’s no other way to hit that mental nerve than to describe in detail. Building atmosphere can require a bit more than the minimalist approach dictates. That said, I’ve been working on updating some of my earlier writings, and taking the liberty to gut out unnecessary words and phrases with a keener eye this time around. In the end, though, it’s all about creating an experience for your readers—the experience that only your unique voice as the writer can give.
